Top notes read first and fade fastest, so the almond and fresh-wood edge is strongest in the first stretch of a burn. What you smell an hour in is mostly the heart, and what lingers in the room as the wax cools is the base — the vanilla, musk and balsamic. Natural wax also holds fragrance differently from paraffin: it throws softer and closer to the jar, so the scent tends to sit in one room rather than travel down a corridor.

Make The Most Of Your Candle

Most of how well this candle behaves is decided in the first hour you burn it.

Trim the cotton wick to roughly 5mm before you light it, every single time
On the first burn, leave it lit until the melted wax reaches the glass all the way round
Keep it on a level, heat-resistant surface, away from curtains, fans and open windows
Stop at three to four hours, then let the wax cool fully before you relight
Never leave it burning unattended, and keep it out of reach of children and pets

1 Trim firstCut the cotton wick back to about 5mm before every burn. A long wick gives you a taller flame, a smoky tip and black marks on the glass.
2 Give the first burn timeLet the wax melt right out to the edge of the jar before you put it out. Natural wax remembers the shape of that first pool and follows it every burn after.
3 Burn it somewhere sensibleLevel surface, heat-resistant, nothing flammable within reach, and out of the draft from a fan or an open window. Keep matchsticks and wick trimmings out of the melted wax.
4 Put it out properlySnuff it or use the cap to starve the flame rather than blowing it out. Let the wax set completely before you move the jar or light it again.

A lit candle is an open flame in a glass container, so treat it like one. Burn it on a level, heat-resistant surface, away from curtains, paper, fabric and anything else that catches. Keep it out of drafts and away from children and pets, and never leave the room while it is lit. Do not burn it for more than three to four hours at a stretch — the glass gets genuinely hot near the base on a long burn, so let it cool fully before you touch or move it. Keep the melted wax clear of wick trimmings and spent matches. Stop using the candle once roughly a centimetre of wax is left at the bottom, so the flame never sits directly against the glass.

About This Candle

What it actually is

A small jar candle, about 6.5cm tall and 6cm across — roughly a tea mug — poured in a coconut-soy blend with a cotton wick and finished with a black metal screw cap. It is scented to read as a forest rather than as a pine-scented cleaner, which is a harder thing to get right than it sounds.

The scent story

The top opens with soft florals, almond and fresh wood — the sweetest part of the candle and the part that goes first. Underneath sits the heart, sandalwood and cedarwood with amber holding them together, and that is what the room smells of for most of a burn. The base is vanilla, musk and balsamic resin, and it is what stays behind after you have put the flame out. The overall shape is cold and dry at the top, warmer the longer it burns.

How to burn it well

Trim the wick short before every burn — most of what people call a bad candle is a long wick. Then, on the very first burn, leave it lit until the melted wax reaches the glass on every side. Wax sets a memory: whatever width the pool reaches the first time is the width it will melt to for the rest of the jar's life. Cut that first burn short and you get a narrow well down the middle and a lot of unused wax around the edge.

Who it suits

People who want a room to smell woody and slightly cold rather than sweet. It works well on a bedside table, on a desk in a WFH corner, or on a windowsill in a one-BHK during monsoon, when everything already smells faintly of damp and you want something drier over the top of it. It is also a reasonable first candle for someone who has previously found scented candles too sweet.

Who it does not suit

If what you actually want is spiced and cosy — ginger, cardamom, that mid-kitchen chai smell — this is the wrong jar and Evening Chai is the right one. If you want flowers in the room, Jaipur Gardens is rich and rose-led, and Summer Evenings is lighter and greener. And if you have someone at home who dislikes woody fragrance, this is not the candle to test that with.

One honest limitation

This is a small jar of natural wax, and both of those things limit how far the scent travels. Natural blends throw more softly than synthetic waxes, and a 6cm jar has a small surface area to throw from. One of these will change the feel of a bedroom or a study. It will not scent an open-plan living-and-dining space, and lighting two of them in a large room is a workaround, not a solution.

Storage and safety

Cap on between burns, out of direct sunlight and away from heat. When it is lit: level heat-resistant surface, nothing flammable nearby, away from fans and open windows, out of reach of children and pets, and never out of the room. Keep sessions short and let the wax set fully before moving or relighting. Stop burning once about a centimetre of wax is left at the base, so the flame is never sitting against the glass.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will one jar last me?

Honestly, we do not have a tested figure to give you, so we are not going to print one. How long it lasts depends almost entirely on how you burn it — short, frequent sessions get more evenings out of a jar than long ones.

What we can tell you is what shortens it: burning past the four-hour mark, leaving it in a draft so the flame works harder, and skipping the wick trim. Do those three things and any candle this size goes faster than it needs to.

Is the wax actually natural, or is that just marketing?

It is a blend of coconut and soy wax with no paraffin in it, and the wick is cotton with no lead core. That is what the label declares and that is what is in the jar.

The trade-off is worth knowing before you buy. Natural wax blends generally burn cooler than paraffin and throw their scent more softly, so this will not hit you the moment you walk in the front door the way a synthetic-wax candle might.

Can I burn it in a small closed room?

A small room is exactly the size this candle suits — a bedroom, a PG room, a study corner. What matters is airflow, not floor area.

Do not burn it in a sealed room with no ventilation at all, and do not run it for hours on end. Leave a window or a door slightly open, keep sessions to three or four hours, and put it out before you sleep.

Will it tunnel down the middle?

Only if you cut the first burn short. Natural wax sets a memory ring — the melted pool on the first burn becomes the width the wax melts to on every burn after it.

So the first time you light it, leave it until the wax has reached the glass all the way round. If it has already started tunnelling, trimming the wick and giving it one longer, uninterrupted burn will often even it back out.

Can I reuse the jar afterwards?

Yes, and it is designed for it — clear glass with a metal screw cap, which is why we have not printed anything on the glass itself.

Once you have stopped burning it, soften the last of the wax with hot water, lift it out, wash the jar with soap and pull the metal wick tab off the base. It works as a small storage jar, a brush pot or a tealight holder after that.

Is it safe to burn around pets?

We are not going to make a safety claim about fragrance and animals, because that depends on the animal, the room and the vet who knows them. What we can say is that the wax is coconut and soy and the wick is cotton with no lead.

Practically: burn it where a cat cannot reach or knock it over, keep the room ventilated, never burn it in a closed room a pet cannot leave, and if your pet has a respiratory condition, ask your vet before you use any scented candle.

Does the scent fade if I leave it unlit for months?

The smell you get from a cold, unlit jar fades before the smell you get from a lit one does. So a jar that seems weak in the cupboard will usually still burn fine.

Keep the cap screwed on between burns and store it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. We have not yet confirmed a shelf-life figure for the candles, so we are not printing one — check the carton for a date before you buy into a long storage plan.
