Most of what you are smelling is one compound. Eucalyptus globulus is naturally rich in 1,8-cineole, also called eucalyptol, and that is what makes the oil read cold and clean rather than sweet or green-herbal. It is also a light, volatile molecule, which is why the smell announces itself the moment the mist starts and why it does not sit around the way a resin or a heavy floral does. Nothing has been added to push that up or hold it down. What is in the bottle is what came off the still.

Make The Most Of Your Oil

Three places it earns its keep: the diffuser tank, a carrier oil for skin, a carrier oil for the scalp.

Diffuser: 3 to 5 drops into the water tank, door shut, in a bedroom-sized room
Face: 2 drops into 1 tablespoon of carrier oil, which works out at about 0.7 percent
Scalp: 5 drops into 2 tablespoons of carrier oil, worked in and combed through
Blending: try it with lemon, rosemary or peppermint before you try it with a floral
Never neat on skin, never near the eyes, never swallowed - patch test before the first use

1 Measure it outFive drops into two tablespoons of carrier oil in a small bowl. Mix it with your fingertip before it goes anywhere near your head.
2 Work it into the scalpPart the hair in sections and press the oil in with your fingertips rather than your nails, moving slowly from the front to the nape.
3 Comb it down the lengthsRun a wide-tooth comb through so the oil reaches past the roots. A wooden comb drags less on damp hair than a plastic one.
4 Leave it, then wash it outSleep with it in, on an old pillowcase, and shampoo it out the next morning. One wash is usually enough at this dilution.

Dilute it, always. Two drops is about 0.1ml, and one tablespoon of carrier oil is 15ml, so that mix lands near 0.7 percent - low, and low is correct for a cineole-rich oil like this one. Doubling the drops does not double the effect, it only doubles the chance of a reaction. Patch test first. A little of the diluted mix on the inside of your forearm, left a full day, before it goes anywhere near your face. Keep it away from the eye area, off broken or shaving-raw skin, and out of your mouth - this is not something to swallow, at any dose. Store it out of reach of children, and do not use it on or around infants. Cats are the hard exception with essential oils generally: no diffuser running in a closed room a cat cannot walk out of, nothing applied to a pet or its bedding, and a word with your vet before you scent a room an animal sleeps in. If you are pregnant or nursing, check with your doctor before using it. Cap it tight and keep it out of direct sunlight - that is what the amber glass is doing. If it stops smelling cold and starts smelling flat and faintly turpentine-like, it has been open too long or stored too warm.

About This Essential Oil

What it actually is

Eucalyptus oil is pressed out of leaves by steam, not squeezed out of a fruit or tapped from a trunk. The tree is Eucalyptus globulus, the blue gum, originally from south-eastern Australia and Tasmania and now planted across large parts of India. It carries two different leaves in its life, which is why the illustrations never quite agree: young trees put out rounded blue-grey leaves in opposite pairs, like the sprig on our label, and mature trees carry long, narrow, sickle-shaped ones.

Almost all of the smell comes from a single compound, 1,8-cineole, and that is why eucalyptus reads the way it does - cold and clean rather than sweet. It is a top note in perfumery terms: light, quick to leave the paper, first to announce itself and first to go.

Where ours comes from

The leaves are steam distilled and the oil is sourced from farms in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, which has done this work for a very long time. What goes in the bottle is the distillate, undiluted, with nothing added to stretch it. Net 15ml, in amber glass with a glass pipette, and 36 months of shelf life from the date it was made.

How to use it well

Small doses, closed rooms. Three to five drops in a diffuser tank is a full dose for a bedroom. On skin it goes into a carrier oil first - two drops in a tablespoon for the face, five drops in two tablespoons for the scalp. Outside those, it is a good utility oil: a few drops in the last rinse of the mop bucket during monsoon, a tissue with two drops on it at the back of a wardrobe shelf, a drop on the cardboard tube of the bathroom roll.

In blends it wants company of its own temperature. Lemon, rosemary, peppermint and tea tree all sit beside it without a fight. Put it next to rose or ylang ylang and it simply walks over them.

Who it suits

People who like a clean-smelling house more than a cosy-smelling one. It is the right buy if your reference for a good smell is a scrubbed bathroom, a chemist shop, a laundry cupboard - and if you would rather a room smelled of nothing than of something sweet.

Who it does not suit

If you are shopping for something to wind down with at the end of the day, this is the wrong bottle and lavender is the right one - soft, floral, powdery, and far more forgiving in a bedroom. If you want a smell that is still there when you come back into the room, buy frankincense; resins sit for hours where a cineole-rich oil like this one does not. And if you want cheerful rather than clean, the orange is the easier one to live with.

One honest limitation

It fades fast. That is not a fault in this bottle, it is what a light, volatile top note does - the same property that makes it hit immediately makes it leave early. Expect to top the diffuser up over a long evening, and do not expect it to hold a large open-plan room at all.

Cap tight, away from sunlight and away from the kitchen stove. Never neat on skin, never near the eyes, never swallowed, and patch test on the forearm a day before the first proper use. Keep it out of reach of children and away from pets - cats especially, who should never be shut in a room with a running diffuser. If you are pregnant or nursing, ask your doctor before using it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will three to five drops really be enough for my room?

In a bedroom, a bathroom or a PG room with the door shut, yes. Start at three, give it a few minutes, and add the fourth only if you actually want it stronger.

In an open living-dining room, honestly, no - and that is true of any small diffuser, whatever you put in it. Two devices at opposite ends of the room work better than doubling the dose in one.

Can I put it straight onto my skin?

No. It goes into a carrier oil first, every time. The dose on our pack is two drops into one tablespoon of carrier, which is roughly 0.7 percent.

Patch test on the inside of your forearm and wait a full day before you use it on your face. Keep it clear of the eye area and off any skin that is broken or freshly shaved.

Will it wreck my humidifier?

Quite possibly, if that humidifier was not built for oils. Ordinary room humidifiers use plastics that essential oils sit badly on, and the damage is not covered by anyone.

Use an ultrasonic diffuser meant for essential oils instead. No diffuser at hand? A few drops on a tissue tucked behind a cupboard door, or into a bucket of hot water while you mop, does the job and ruins nothing.

Is it safe around my cat?

Treat cats as a firm exception. Do not run a diffuser in a closed room your cat cannot leave, and never put the oil on a cat, on its bedding or in its water.

The same caution goes for birds and for small dogs. Ask your vet before you scent any room a pet sleeps in - it is a two-minute question and it settles the matter.

Does it expire?

Shelf life is 36 months from the date of manufacture, and that date is printed on the carton.

Keep the cap tight and the bottle out of sunlight. If the smell turns flat and slightly turpentine-like instead of cold and green, it has oxidised - it has been open too long, or stored somewhere too warm.

Does it smell medicinal?

Yes, and that is the point of it. Cold, camphorous, green - much closer to a bathroom that has just been cleaned than to anything you would light on a dinner table. Some people love exactly that, and some find it clinical.

If you wanted warm and soft, buy the lavender instead. If you want the cold note with the edge taken off, one drop of our orange alongside it rounds it out considerably.

Can I apply this directly to my skin?

No. Undiluted essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be mixed with a carrier oil — coconut, jojoba or almond — before they touch skin. Patch test first.

How long before I see results?

Give it 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. Essential oils work gradually; anything promising overnight change is overpromising.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

Speak to your doctor first. Several essential oils are generally avoided during the first trimester, so please get advice specific to you rather than relying on a general rule.
