Notes do not all arrive together. The lightest ones — ginger, orange peel — are what you catch in the first few minutes, and they are also the first to go. The spice through the middle holds steady for most of the burn. The heavy end of the blend, vanilla and honey, is slow to lift and slow to leave, which is why the room still smells of it after the flame is out.

Make The Most Of Your Candle

Most of what a candle does well or badly is decided in the first hour it is lit.

Trim the cotton wick to roughly 5mm before every single burn
On the first light, leave it until the wax is liquid from glass to glass
Keep each burn to three or four hours, then let the wax set again
Pick out any wick trimmings or spent matches from the wax pool
Stop using the jar once about 1cm of wax is left at the base, and never leave it burning unattended

1 TrimTake the cotton wick down to about 5mm before you light it, every time. A long wick gives a tall flame, a tall flame gives soot on the glass.
2 First burnGive the first burn long enough for the melted wax to reach the glass all the way round. Wax remembers the shape it sets in, so a short first burn narrows every burn after it.
3 Burn safelyLevel, heat-resistant surface. Away from drafts, curtains, paper, children and pets. Three to four hours at a stretch, then let it cool.
4 Put it out

A lit candle is an open flame in a glass container, and it should be treated like one. Burn it on a level, heat-resistant surface — a tile, a ceramic plate, a wooden coaster — never directly on a plastic shelf or a cloth runner. Keep it away from curtains, paper, drafts, children and pets, and never leave it burning in a room you have walked out of. Trim the wick to about 5mm before every burn and keep the wax pool clear of trimmings and matchsticks. Do not burn for more than three to four hours at a time; the glass gets hot near the base on a long burn, so let the wax cool completely before you touch, move or relight it. Stop burning once roughly 1cm of wax remains at the bottom, which is the point at which the flame sits close enough to the glass to overheat it.

About This Candle

What it actually is

A 65mm by 60mm glass jar of coconut and soy wax with one lead-free cotton wick, scented as masala chai. That combination matters more than it sounds. Coconut-soy blends melt at a lower temperature than paraffin, which is why the pool goes liquid gently and the glass stays manageable, and it is also why a plain cotton wick is the usual partner for this kind of wax — it draws softly, without the tall, sooty flame a zinc-core wick would give here.

The scent story

Top: ginger, black tea, orange peel. Middle: cardamom, cinnamon, clove. Base: vanilla, nutmeg, honey. They do not all show up at once. The ginger and the orange peel are sharp and light, so they reach you first and leave first. The spice through the middle is the long stretch of the burn, the part that actually smells like a pan on the stove. Underneath, vanilla and honey are heavy and slow, which is why the room still holds the scent after you have put it out.

How to burn it well

Trim to about 5mm, every time, before the match. Give the first burn a long enough run that the wax goes liquid glass to glass — that first pool sets the width of every pool after it. Then three or four hours at a stretch is plenty, and a full cool-down between burns keeps the wick straight and the glass sound.

Who it suits

People who like their rooms smelling of food rather than flowers. It works in a bedroom, a WFH corner, a small balcony on a cold evening, a festive table where there is already cardamom in the air. It suits a monsoon or winter evening better than an April afternoon, and it sits well next to actual chai instead of competing with it.

Who it does not suit

Anyone after something cold, green or clean. If your instinct is rain, wet earth and vetiver, First Raindrops is the one built for that register. If you want florals — rose, jasmine, something richer — Jaipur Gardens or Summer Evenings will land better. And if food smells in a bedroom bother you, this is not the jar to test that on.

One honest limitation

It is a small jar with a single wick, so it scents one ordinary room. Put it in a large open-plan living room, a hall or a stairwell and it will be there without ever quite filling the space. Natural wax also throws more quietly than a synthetic blend; if you want a scent that announces itself from the corridor, this is not it.

Storage and safety

Cap on, out of the sun, away from heat when you are not using it. When you are: level heat-resistant surface, clear of curtains, paper, drafts, children and pets, never unattended, wax pool kept clean of trimmings and matches, and stop for good once about 1cm of wax is left at the base. The glass warms up near the bottom on a long burn, so let it cool fully before you pick it up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will one jar last me?

We do not print an hours figure, because we have not run a documented burn test on this jar and we would rather say nothing than publish a number we cannot stand behind. What we can tell you is that this is a 65mm jar with one cotton wick, so it is an evenings-and-weekends candle, not a permanent light source.

How far it goes is mostly down to you. Three-hour burns with a trimmed wick get far more out of the same wax than long unattended ones, which burn hot, throw fast and finish early.

Is the wax really natural, or is there paraffin in it?

It is a coconut and soy wax blend with a lead-free cotton wick. No paraffin.

The honest trade-off: natural wax blends generally burn cooler than paraffin and throw their scent more softly, so this will not hit you at the door the way a synthetic supermarket candle does. It builds over the first twenty minutes instead.

Can I burn it in a small closed hostel room?

Yes — a small room is exactly what a 65mm jar is sized for, and in a big open-plan living room you would barely register it.

Leave a window or door slightly open anyway. That is about airflow around an open flame, not about the scent, and it also stops a small closed room going from pleasant to heavy after an hour.

Will it tunnel down the middle?

Only if the first burn is cut short. Wax sets in the shape it last melted, so if you blow it out while there is still a hard ring at the edge, every burn after that will follow the narrow channel you just made.

Give the first light long enough for the surface to go liquid right up to the glass, then you can burn it in short stretches without trouble.

Can I reuse the jar afterwards?

Yes, that is what the glass and the screw cap are for. Once you stop burning it, warm the last of the wax with hot water, pour it out, wash the jar with soap and lift off the label.

It comes out as a small container — pens, clips, cotton buds, spare change. Do not put it in an oven or a freezer to speed the wax out; sudden temperature changes crack glass.

Is it safe to burn around a cat or a dog?

We are not going to make a health claim about your pet either way. What we will say is practical: keep the flame somewhere a tail cannot reach it, never burn it in a room where an animal is shut in alone, and put it out if the room starts to feel closed in.

If your pet has a known respiratory problem, ask your vet before you burn anything scented in the house, this candle included.

Will the scent fade if I leave it unlit for months?

Keep the metal cap screwed on and the jar out of direct sunlight and away from heat, and it holds up well. Sun and warmth are what drive fragrance out of wax, not time on a shelf.

We have not confirmed a shelf-life figure for the candle range yet, so we are not printing one. Treat it as a product to use within a reasonable stretch rather than one to store for years.

Is the wax actually natural?

Yes — a coconut and soy wax blend, not paraffin. It's why the burn is cleaner and the scent throw is a little softer than a synthetic-wax candle.

Will it tunnel down the middle?

Only if the first burn is cut short. Let the very first burn run until the melt pool reaches the glass edge on all sides — usually an hour or two — and it should burn evenly after that.

Will one candle be enough for my room?

For a regular bedroom or a small living area, yes. For a larger open-plan room, it'll be noticeable near where it's burning rather than filling the whole space — that's true of most natural-wax candles this size.

Can I reuse the jar after?

Yes. Once the wax is finished, wipe it out with warm soapy water and it works well as a small glass for pens, brushes, or anything else on a shelf.
