Most of the lift at the top of frankincense comes from alpha-pinene, with some limonene behind it — the same family of compounds that gives pine needles and citrus peel their sharpness. That is why the first thirty seconds read greener and brighter than you expect from something this dark and resinous. The heavier boswellic acids people associate with the raw resin are too large to carry over in steam, so they are not in a distilled oil at all. What you are smelling is the volatile part of the tear, nothing more.

Make The Most Of Your Oil

Always diluted, always counted out drop by drop.

Face: 2 drops into 1 tbsp of carrier oil, mixed in a small bowl, at night
Hair: five drops into two tablespoons of carrier oil, worked into the scalp and combed down the lengths

Essential oil is not a face oil. Frankincense goes on skin at roughly 2 drops to a tablespoon of carrier — about 1% — and on scalp at 5 drops to 2 tbsp, which is the same neighbourhood. Patch test on the inner forearm and wait 24 hours before you commit. Keep it away from eyes and broken skin. Never swallow it, and keep the bottle out of reach of children. Cats are especially sensitive to essential oils and cannot process them the way we do, so do not apply anything to a pet and do not diffuse in a room your cat cannot walk out of. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before using it at all. The bottle is dark for a reason — pinene-rich oils turn with air and light, so keep the cap on tight and the bottle out of the sun.

About This Essential Oil

What it actually is

Frankincense is not pressed from a fruit or steamed off a leaf. It is tree sap. Cut the bark of a Boswellia tree and it bleeds a milky oleo-gum-resin that hardens on the trunk into pale, knobbly tears — the same lumpy golden pieces printed on the carton. Those tears are collected, sorted, and steam distilled, and what comes over in the steam is the volatile part only: the aroma. The heavy boswellic acids people talk about in connection with the raw resin are too large to travel with steam, so a distilled oil does not contain them. This bottle is the smell of the resin, and that is the honest description of it.

Where ours comes from

The carton says the farms of Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh — India's distilling town, where copper degs and steam stills have been running for centuries and where a great deal of the country's essential oil is made. Boswellia carterii itself is a tree of dry, rocky country in the Horn of Africa and southern Arabia, not of the Gangetic plain, so the resin and the distillation are worth asking about separately if that matters to you.

How to use it well

Count, do not pour. Two drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil covers a face; five drops in two tablespoons covers a scalp and a full length of hair. At roughly 0.05 ml a drop, a 15 ml bottle holds somewhere around three hundred drops, which means a hair application costs you about one sixtieth of the bottle. People run out of patience with frankincense long before they run out of oil.

It also behaves well as the anchor of a blend. Being slow and heavy, it holds lighter oils down and stops them disappearing in ten minutes — the reason perfumers have used resins as fixatives for as long as perfumery has existed. Orange, lavender, rose and ylang ylang all sit on top of it comfortably.

Who it suits

People who want warmth without sweetness. If your instinct is that most scented things smell like a shampoo aisle, this is the one in the range for you — it is dry, woody, faintly bitter at the edges, and completely unlike a floral. It suits a WFH corner in the evening, a bedroom after a long day, a wardrobe shelf, and anyone who likes the smell of an old house more than the smell of a spa.

Who it does not suit

If you want a room to smell instantly, visibly different the moment someone walks in, this is the wrong bottle. Frankincense takes its time and rewards a closed door. Buy peppermint or lemon for immediate impact. If you want warm and soft and cosy rather than warm and dry, lavender is the better buy. And if resin reads to you as religious — loban, temple, a puja room — that association will not go away just because the oil is distilled. Orange or ylang ylang will give you a warm room with none of that.

One honest limitation

It is quiet. In a large open-plan room, or any room with a fan or an AC running, a base note this slow simply gets diluted into nothing. It is not a lack of quality — it is what a heavy, low-volatility oil does in moving air. Small rooms, doors shut, or blended under something lighter.

Amber glass, cap tight, drawer or cupboard, away from the window. Pinene-rich oils oxidise with air and light, and an oxidised oil is both duller to smell and harsher on skin. Dilute before every skin use, patch test on the inner forearm and wait a day, keep it away from eyes and out of reach of children. Never swallow it. Will one bottle scent my whole flat?

Honestly, no. Frankincense is a base note — it sits low and moves slowly, which is exactly what makes it last, and also what stops it filling a 1BHK on its own.

Shut the door and it will hold a bedroom or a bathroom comfortably. For an open-plan room, or a room with a fan running, pair it with something lighter that travels — orange or lemon — and let the frankincense be the part that stays behind.

Can I put it straight on my skin?

No. This is undiluted essential oil, not a serum. Two drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil is the dose on the pack, and that is already a strong mix.

Patch test the diluted blend on your inner forearm and give it a full day before it goes anywhere near your face. Keep it off the eye area and off broken skin entirely.

Can I put it in my humidifier?

Not unless the manufacturer says so. Ultrasonic humidifiers built for water alone use plastics that essential oils will slowly cloud, soften or crack, and oil in the tank can void the warranty.

Use a diffuser or a ceramic burner made for oil. If you are unsure which yours is, check the manual before the first drop goes in — a bottle of oil is cheaper to replace than the appliance.

Is it safe to diffuse around my cat?

Cats are more sensitive to essential oils than we are and cannot clear them the way other animals do. Never apply oil to a cat, and never leave one shut in a room with a running diffuser.

If you do diffuse, keep the door open so the cat can leave, keep the bottle where it cannot be knocked over, and ask your vet first if your cat is young, old or unwell. The same caution goes for dogs and birds.

Does it expire?

Yes — 36 months from the date of manufacture, printed on the carton. That is the outer limit, not a target.

Frankincense carries a lot of pinene, and pinene-rich oils turn with exposure to air and light: the bright opening goes flat first and the oil gets harsher on skin. Cap it tightly after every use and keep it in a drawer or cupboard rather than on a sunny windowsill.

Will my room smell like an agarbatti?

Related, but not the same thing. Burning loban or dhoop gives you smoke as well as resin — that dry, slightly sooty edge is combustion, not the resin itself.

Distilled, you get the resin without the smoke: warmer, cleaner, a little piney at the start and woody once it settles. If the association still puts you off, lavender or ylang ylang will give you a soft room without any of the temple reference.

Can I apply this directly to my skin?

No. Undiluted essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be mixed with a carrier oil — coconut, jojoba or almond — before they touch skin. Patch test first.

How long before I see results?

Give it 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. Essential oils work gradually; anything promising overnight change is overpromising.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

Speak to your doctor first. Several essential oils are generally avoided during the first trimester, so please get advice specific to you rather than relying on a general rule.
