What's Good

  • A heavy white floral: sweet, warm, a little green at the edges
  • Sits in a small room for hours rather than minutes
  • Two drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil is a whole face and neck massage
  • Five drops in two tablespoons is enough for a full scalp oiling
  • One ingredient on the carton, with nothing carrying it
  • Amber glass and a glass pipette, so you can count exactly what you use

This is a heavy, sweet floral, not a fresh one. It fills a room and it stays there. If you want something bright and light that lifts a space and clears out by evening, buy the Lemon instead. If you want warm and soft rather than rich and sweet, buy the Lavender.

What's Inside Matters

One line on the ingredient list, and that line is the whole product.

  • Jasmine flower oil (Jasminum sambac) - the only ingredient
  • Steam distilled from the flowers
  • Grown and distilled in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh
  • Undiluted, with no carrier oil
  • No preservatives
  • No added colour and no synthetic fragrance

The sweetness in jasmine comes largely from benzyl acetate, with linalool sitting under it and softening the edge. What makes it read heady rather than merely pretty is indole, present only in traces - it is the reason jasmine smells almost overripe when you hold the open bottle to your nose, and clean and sweet from across the room. That gap between close-up and far-away is normal. Do not judge the oil from the neck of the bottle.

Make The Most Of Your Oil

Two routines are printed on the pack, and both of them start with a spoon.

  • Skin: 2 drops into 1 tbsp of carrier oil, worked into face and neck at night
  • Hair: 5 drops into 2 tbsp of carrier oil, massaged through the scalp
  • Leave either one on overnight in a one-BHK bedroom, then wash it out
  • Burner or diffuser: add it one drop at a time and stop the moment you can smell it from the doorway
  • Patch test on your inner forearm first and wait a full day before you use it on your face
  1. 1 Mix it2 drops into 1 tbsp of carrier oil in a small bowl. Coconut, almond or sesame all work. Never neat on skin.
  2. 2 Apply itFingertips, face and neck, working upward. A tablespoon is more than enough for both.
  3. 3 Massage it inTwo or three minutes, until the skin stops feeling wet and starts feeling soft.
  4. 4 Sleep on itLeave it overnight on an old pillowcase, then wash off in the morning. Jasmine will still be on the cotton.

Always dilute. The working ratio on this pack is 2 drops to 1 tbsp of carrier oil for skin and 5 drops to 2 tbsp for scalp - that is roughly one drop of jasmine to every teaspoon and a half of carrier. Patch test on the inner forearm and give it 24 hours before it goes near your face. Keep it away from your eyes and the inside of your nose; if it gets in, flush with plain carrier oil rather than water. Never swallow it. Store it out of reach of children. Keep it away from pets, and be especially careful with cats - they process essential oils very differently from us, so do not run it in a closed room a cat cannot leave, and do not use it on their bedding. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or on any medication, ask your doctor before using it on skin.

About This Essential Oil

What it actually is

Jasminum sambac is the jasmine most of India already knows by another name - mogra, or bela, the one strung into gajras outside temples and railway stations. It is a scrambling shrub with thick glossy leaves and small waxy white flowers that open after dark. That timing is the whole story of the plant: the scent is at its strongest at night, which is why the flowers are picked in the cool hours and moved fast.

It takes a great weight of flowers to fill a small bottle. That is simply how jasmine behaves - the flower is generous with smell and stingy with oil. It is also why you will not find jasmine sold in the size you buy coconut oil in, and why 15 ml is the honest format for it.

Where ours comes from

Kannauj, in Uttar Pradesh. It is a town that has been distilling flowers for a very long time, and it still smells like it. Ours is steam distilled and bottled undiluted, with the species printed on the carton so you can check it against what you are buying.

How to use it well

Everything starts with a spoon of carrier oil. Two drops into a tablespoon for face and neck; five drops into two tablespoons for a scalp massage. Mix in a small steel katori, not in your palm, so you can actually see the ratio.

For a room, less than you think. Add it to a burner or diffuser one drop at a time and stop as soon as you can smell it standing at the door. Jasmine builds. A dose that seems modest at nine o'clock can be too much by ten, especially in a closed PG room with the AC on and the door shut.

Who it suits

People who like a scent to announce that someone lives here. If you already reach for mogra, sandalwood or heavier attar-style smells, this will feel familiar. It is good on hair, good on an oiling night, good in a bedroom you are about to sleep in, and good on cotton - a single drop on the inside hem of a dupatta lasts through an evening.

Who it does not suit

If you want a room to feel aired out and bright, this is the wrong bottle - buy the Lemon or the Orange. If what you actually want is soft, powdery and calm at the end of a day, buy the Lavender; it does that job better and it is more forgiving if you overpour. And if the person you share a room with dislikes sweet florals, believe them before you buy, because this one does not stay politely on your side of the room.

One honest limitation

It is difficult to use lightly. Jasmine has almost no gentle setting - the gap between "just enough" and "too much" is one drop wide, and once it is too much you cannot take it back out of the air. Open a window and wait. If you like a scent you can adjust as you go, this is not that oil.

Storage and safety

Dilute always: roughly one drop of jasmine to a teaspoon and a half of carrier oil. Patch test on the inner forearm and wait a day. Keep it out of your eyes, never swallow it, and keep the bottle out of reach of children. Keep it away from pets and be especially careful with cats, who are far more sensitive to essential oils than we are. Ask your doctor before using it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Store upright, capped, in the dark, and use it within 36 months of the manufacture date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will 15 ml actually last, or is this a two-week bottle?

It lasts longer than it looks. A dropper drop is about 0.05 ml, so 15 ml works out to roughly 300 drops. At 2 drops for a face routine that is around 150 nights; at 5 drops for a scalp oiling, around 60.

The real limit is not the bottle, it is the air. Keep the cap screwed on tight and the bottle in a drawer rather than on a sunny windowsill, and use it inside the 36 months printed on the carton.

Can I put it straight on my skin?

No. This is undiluted oil, and undiluted is the point - it is meant to be mixed, not applied neat. The pack gives 2 drops into 1 tbsp of carrier oil for face and neck.

Patch test on your inner forearm and wait a full day before it goes anywhere near your face. If you get any redness or itch, stop and wash it off with more carrier oil.

Is it safe around my cat?

Be careful. Cats handle essential oils very differently from people, and heavy florals are not an exception. Do not diffuse it in a closed room your cat cannot walk out of, and keep it off their bedding, their bowls and your own hands before you pick them up.

If your cat has any breathing trouble, skip room scenting entirely and keep the oil to a bathroom with the door shut. Ask your vet if you are unsure.

Can I put a few drops in my humidifier?

Usually not. Most humidifiers are built to move plain water, and their tanks and seals are not made for oils - check the manual before you try, because a lot of manufacturers void the warranty over exactly this.

A ceramic tealight burner or an ultrasonic diffuser meant for oils is the right tool. Add jasmine one drop at a time; it builds faster than you expect.

Does it smell like the mogra gajra I already know?

Related, but stronger and less green. A fresh gajra gives you the flower plus the stem, the thread and the water it was sprinkled with. This is the flower alone, concentrated, with none of that freshness around it.

Held to the nose it is heavier and sweeter than you may be expecting, almost overripe. In a room it settles into something much closer to the garland.

Does it expire?

Yes. The shelf life is 36 months from the date of manufacture, printed on the carton. Amber glass is doing part of the work by keeping light out, but heat and air still get to it.

Keep the bottle upright, capped, somewhere dark and cool - a drawer, not the bathroom shelf above the geyser. If it ever smells sharp or sour rather than sweet, it has gone; stop using it.

Can I use it during pregnancy?

Ask your doctor first. This is not a question to settle from a product page, and the honest answer depends on you, not on the oil.

If you do get the go-ahead, keep the dose to what the pack prints and keep the room ventilated. Strong florals can feel like a lot when your sense of smell is already heightened.

Can I apply this directly to my skin?

No. Undiluted essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be mixed with a carrier oil — coconut, jojoba or almond — before they touch skin. Patch test first.

How long before I see results?

Give it 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. Essential oils work gradually; anything promising overnight change is overpromising.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

Speak to your doctor first. Several essential oils are generally avoided during the first trimester, so please get advice specific to you rather than relying on a general rule.

When will my order arrive?

Orders dispatch the same or next working day. Metro cities: 3-5 business days. Rest of India: 4-6 business days.
