What's Good

  • A soft, powdery floral - warm rather than sharp or medicinal
  • Reads closer to clean bedsheets than to a perfume counter
  • Sits in the middle of a blend and does not fight lemon, orange or rosemary
  • Dilutes into a carrier oil for hair and face routines without turning harsh
  • One ingredient, steam distilled, nothing added to bulk it out
  • 15 ml in amber glass with a pipette - roughly 300 drops of it

It is a soft, powdery smell rather than a cold or bracing one, so if you want something sharp and just-cleaned, peppermint or eucalyptus is the better buy. And if you want a scent that hangs about for hours, frankincense holds on longer than this does.

What's Inside Matters

One plant, one process, one line on the ingredient list.

  • Lavandula angustifolia oil - the only thing in the bottle
  • Distilled from the flowering tops, not from the leaf or the woody stem
  • Steam distilled, so no solvent ever touches it
  • Sourced from farms in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh
  • Naturally rich in linalool and linalyl acetate
  • Undiluted - no carrier, no fragrance, no colour

The softness is not an accident of blending. Lavandula angustifolia is naturally high in linalool and linalyl acetate, and those two are what make it read floral-sweet with a powdery tail instead of green and camphorous the way its rougher cousins do. It is also why it behaves as a middle note - it does not announce itself the way a peel oil does, and it does not sit for hours the way a resin does.

Make The Most Of Your Oil

Two drops for your face, five for your hair, and never neat on skin.

  • Hair: five drops stirred through two tablespoons of any carrier oil, worked into the scalp
  • Face: two drops in a single tablespoon of carrier oil, at night, on clean skin
  • Diffuser, bedroom door shut: start at the lowest drop count your diffuser's own instructions give and go up from there
  • Wardrobe and linen: lavender has traditionally gone into cloth and drawers rather than into the air
  • Patch test on your inner forearm and wait a day before it goes anywhere near your face
  1. 1 Dilute itFive drops into two tablespoons of a carrier oil - coconut, almond, whatever you already keep. Stir it through properly.
  2. 2 Work it inFingertips, not nails. Section the hair and massage the oil into the scalp itself rather than the lengths.
  3. 3 Spread it outComb or run it down the lengths so nothing is left sitting in one wet patch.
  4. 4 Leave it, then washOvernight on an old pillowcase, then shampoo it out in the morning. Twice if your hair is fine.

This is undiluted oil, so it always goes into something else first. The two routines on the carton both land under one percent: five drops is about a quarter of a millilitre into two tablespoons, which is thirty millilitres, and two drops is about a tenth of a millilitre into fifteen. Patch test on the inner forearm and leave it a full day before you commit. Keep it away from your eyes, and if it gets in, flush with plain carrier oil rather than water. Never swallow it. Store it out of reach of children, and out of reach of pets - cats in particular are far more sensitive to essential oils than we are, so keep it off their fur and out of rooms they cannot walk away from. If you are pregnant or nursing, check with your doctor first. Cap it tight, keep it out of direct sun, and it holds for thirty-six months from the date of manufacture.

About This Essential Oil

What it actually is

Lavender oil does not come from the whole plant. It comes from the flowering tops - the slim purple spikes at the end of each stem - cut, wilted, and put through steam. The steam carries the volatile oil out of the flower, and it condenses back into two layers, oil floating on water. That is the entire process, and it is why the ingredient list has one line on it.

Botanically this is Lavandula angustifolia, sometimes called true or English lavender, a low grey-green shrub in the mint family. It is the mildest of the lavenders. Its rougher relatives carry far more camphor and smell noticeably sharper - closer to a medicine cabinet than a linen drawer.

Where ours comes from

From farms in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh - a town that has been distilling for centuries and still runs on copper stills and hand-cut plant material. Steam distilled, then straight into amber glass with a gold collar and a glass pipette, one bottle to a carton.

How to use it well

Restraint is the whole skill. Five drops through two tablespoons of carrier oil for the scalp, two drops in one tablespoon for the face at night. In a diffuser, start at whatever the smallest recommended dose is for your machine, door closed, and add rather than start high - lavender turns cloying long before it turns weak.

It blends easily. Lemon and orange lift it and make it read fresher. Rosemary gives it a herbal spine. Frankincense sits underneath it and slows the fade. Ylang ylang pushes it heavier and sweeter, which you may or may not want.

Who it suits

Anyone who wants warm and soft rather than cold and clean. If your idea of a good-smelling room is fresh bedsheets and a wardrobe that has been aired, this is the one. It also suits anyone buying their first essential oil, because it is forgiving in a blend and hard to make actively unpleasant.

Who it does not suit

If you want the smell of a bathroom that has just been scrubbed, this is the wrong bottle - eucalyptus or peppermint gives you that cold, camphorous snap, and lavender will only ever read soft next to them. If you want something bright and cheerful, orange or lemon does that better. And if you want a scent that is still noticeable three hours later, frankincense is the buy - resins sit; florals do not.

There is also a purely personal one. A good number of people associate lavender with detergent, hospital corridors or a grandparent's cupboard, and no amount of quality changes that association. If it has never been your smell, this will not convert you.

One honest limitation

It fades. As a middle note it sits longer than a peel oil but nowhere near as long as a resin or a wood, and in a large open room it thins out faster than you would like. Close the door, use a smaller room, or pair it with something heavier if you want it to last.

Storage and safety

Cap tight, keep it upright, keep it out of direct sun and off the top of the fridge. It holds for thirty-six months from manufacture. Always dilute before skin contact, patch test first, keep it away from the eyes, never swallow it, and keep it out of reach of children and pets - cats especially. If you are pregnant or nursing, check with your doctor before you use it at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will one bottle scent my whole flat?

Honestly, not on its own. Lavender is a middle note and a quiet one - it does not push through a large open-plan room the way a citrus or a eucalyptus will.

Shut the bedroom door and it is a different story. Small rooms, hostel rooms, PG rooms, a WFH corner, a bathroom - that is where this one earns its keep.

Can I put it straight on my skin?

No. It is undiluted oil, and undiluted oil belongs in a carrier oil first - two drops in a tablespoon for your face, five in two tablespoons for your scalp.

Patch test on the inner forearm and wait a day. Lavender is one of the gentler oils, but gentler is not the same as safe neat, and skin that is already irritated is not the place to find out.

Will it damage my humidifier?

Very likely, yes. Ordinary room humidifiers are not built for oils - the oil degrades the plastic tank and clogs the wick or the ultrasonic plate.

Use a proper diffuser meant for essential oils, or skip the machine entirely and put a drop on a cotton pad tucked behind a cushion.

Is it safe around my cat?

Treat it as not safe. Cats are far more sensitive to essential oils than we are, and they cannot tell you when a room has become too much.

Never put it on their fur, never diffuse in a room they cannot leave, and keep the bottle where a curious paw will not knock it off a shelf. If you have a cat, ask your vet before you diffuse anything at all.

Does it expire?

Thirty-six months from the date of manufacture, printed on the carton.

Heat and light shorten that. The amber glass handles the light; you handle the heat by keeping it out of a sunny windowsill and capping it properly after every use.

Will it smell like soap?

To some noses, yes. Lavender has been in soap, detergent and linen sachets for so long that the powdery end of it can read as clean-cupboard rather than as floral.

If that is not what you want, a drop of lemon or orange alongside it lifts the whole thing and pulls it away from the laundry association.

Can I apply this directly to my skin?

No. Undiluted essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be mixed with a carrier oil — coconut, jojoba or almond — before they touch skin. Patch test first.

How long before I see results?

Give it 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. Essential oils work gradually; anything promising overnight change is overpromising.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

Speak to your doctor first. Several essential oils are generally avoided during the first trimester, so please get advice specific to you rather than relying on a general rule.

When will my order arrive?

Orders dispatch the same or next working day. Metro cities: 3-5 business days. Rest of India: 4-6 business days.
