What's Good

  • Smells like a peel torn open, not like orange squash
  • A top note: loud on arrival, then quietly gone
  • Sharp at first, sweeter and rounder as it settles
  • One ingredient, undiluted, so you set the strength yourself
  • Sits well with lavender, frankincense or ylang ylang in a blend
  • Roughly 300 drops in the bottle, and most uses take two to five

This is a bright, fast-fading fruit smell rather than a warm one. If you want something soft and cosy that is still in the room at bedtime, buy lavender instead. If you want a scent that holds for hours, frankincense is the one.

What's Inside Matters

One ingredient, and the carton names it: pure orange oil, nothing added to stretch it.

  • 100% pure orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis)
  • Steam distilled, single ingredient, nothing blended in
  • Taken from the peel of the fruit, where the oil sits
  • From farms around Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh
  • Undiluted, so there is no carrier oil in the bottle
  • No preservatives, no fragrance oil, no colour

Sweet orange oil is mostly d-limonene, and that single compound is doing most of the smelling. It is what makes the oil read as fruit rather than perfume, and it is also why the smell arrives so fast and leaves so fast - limonene is light and volatile. It is the same compound that made orange peel a standby in homemade cleaning sprays long before anyone bottled it. Limonene also oxidises in air, light and heat, which is the practical reason the bottle is amber glass and the cap goes back on straight away.

Make The Most Of Your Oil

Two routines are printed on the pack, and both of them start in a bowl of carrier oil.

  • Face: 2 drops into 1 tbsp of carrier oil, spread thin, left on overnight and rinsed off
  • Scalp: 5 drops into 2 tbsp of carrier oil, worked in with fingertips, left overnight
  • Diffuser: add it to the water tank of an ultrasonic diffuser with the door closed
  • Wardrobe: a little on a cotton pad, tucked behind the folded clothes on a shelf
  • Never neat on skin, never near the eyes, and patch test on your forearm first
  1. 1 Dilute itTwo drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil in a small bowl. It does not go on undiluted.
  2. 2 Test itDab a little on the inside of your forearm and leave it a day before it goes anywhere near your face.
  3. 3 Spread it thinFingertips, light pressure, an even film. You want a faint shine, not a slick.
  4. 4 Rinse it offLeave it on overnight and wash your face in the morning.

Dilution is the whole thing. Two drops in one tablespoon of carrier oil is about 0.1 ml of essential oil in 15 ml of carrier - under one percent, and that is the strength to stay at. The scalp mix works out about the same: five drops in two tablespoons. Patch test on the inside of your forearm and wait a day before it goes on your face. Keep it away from your eyes. Do not swallow it. Keep the bottle out of reach of children and pets, and remember that cats are especially sensitive to essential oils - if you diffuse, do it in a room your cat can walk out of, and ask your vet first. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor before using it at all.

About This Essential Oil

What it actually is

Orange oil does not come from the fruit you eat. It sits in tiny glands in the coloured layer of the peel - the reason a squeezed rind sprays a fine mist that catches the light. That mist is essentially this bottle, collected and concentrated. Most of it is a single compound, d-limonene, which is why the smell is so immediately recognisable and why it behaves the way it does: it arrives in a second and it does not hang about.

Where ours comes from

Kannauj, in Uttar Pradesh, is a distilling town before it is anything else, and our fruit comes from farms around it. The oil is steam distilled and bottled undiluted into 15 ml of amber glass with a glass pipette. Amber is not decoration - light is one of the three things that dulls a citrus oil, along with air and heat.

How to use it well

Small amounts, close quarters. Two drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil for the face; five drops in two tablespoons for the scalp, worked in with fingertips and left overnight. In a diffuser, run it in a room with the door shut rather than trying to fill the flat. It blends easily - a drop alongside lavender softens it, frankincense gives it something to sit on, ylang ylang makes it richer.

Who it suits

People who want a room to feel awake. It is a morning smell and a working-desk smell: a hostel room after the windows have been shut all day, a bathroom, a kitchen that still smells of last night's tadka, a wardrobe going musty in monsoon. If you like the smell of a peel torn open at your desk, this is that, bottled.

Who it does not suit

If you want warm and calming - the kind of smell you run an hour before bed - this is the wrong bottle. Buy lavender. If you want something with weight that is still noticeable long after you set it going, buy frankincense. And if you find citrus scents too sharp in general, this will not be the exception; it is one of the sharpest openings in the range.

One honest limitation

It fades fast. That is not a fault in this particular bottle - it is what a light, volatile top note does. You will smell it strongly, then find yourself wondering where it went. Plan for topping up rather than expecting one dose to carry an evening, and do not buy it as a whole-flat solution.

Storage and safety

Cap it tightly, keep it out of direct sun, and keep it away from the stove and the top of the fridge. Never use it neat on skin and never swallow it. Keep it away from your eyes. Store it out of reach of children and pets, and treat cats as the exception they are - do not apply it to them and give them a room they can leave. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will 15 ml be enough to scent my whole flat?

Honestly, not on its own. This is a light citrus oil and it thins out fast, so it works in a closed room - a hostel room, a PG room, a bathroom, a WFH corner - far better than across an open-plan one-BHK.

If your main plan is a large room, shut the door for the first half hour and open it afterwards. If you want something that holds a big space for hours, frankincense is the better buy from our range.

Can I put it straight on my skin?

No. It goes into a carrier oil first - two drops into one tablespoon, which is the ratio printed on the pack. Undiluted essential oil on skin is asking for irritation.

Patch test on the inside of your forearm and leave it a day before it goes on your face. If you have had reactions to citrus before, skip it.

Can I use it in my humidifier?

Better not. Humidifiers are built for water, and oil in the tank can clog the works. Use an ultrasonic diffuser, which is designed for it.

Citrus oils are also known to be hard on some plastics and painted finishes over time, so wipe up spills on a table or a diffuser body rather than leaving them to sit.

Is it safe around my cat?

Cats are the household exception with essential oils and are widely treated as far more sensitive than people or dogs. Do not apply anything to your cat, and keep the bottle where it cannot be knocked over.

If you diffuse, do it in a room the cat can walk out of, keep it short, and ask your vet first. If you are not sure, do not diffuse.

Does it expire?

Best before is 36 months from the date of manufacture, printed on the carton. That is the outer limit, not a promise about the smell.

Citrus oils dull faster than most once air gets to them. Cap it tightly, keep it out of sunlight and away from the stove, and it will hold its sharpness far longer.

Does it smell like orange squash?

No. Squash smells sweet and flat. This smells like the peel - sharp and slightly bitter on the first breath, then it rounds out into something sweeter.

If you were hoping for a soft, dessert-like sweetness, this will read too sharp for you. Ylang ylang from our range is the richer, creamier option.

Can I put it in the bath or drink it?

Never drink it. And oil does not mix into bathwater - it sits on the surface undiluted and lands on skin at full strength, which is exactly what you are trying to avoid.

If you want it in the bathroom, put a little on a cotton pad and leave it on a shelf, or run a diffuser outside the door.

Can I apply this directly to my skin?

No. Undiluted essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be mixed with a carrier oil — coconut, jojoba or almond — before they touch skin. Patch test first.

How long before I see results?

Give it 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. Essential oils work gradually; anything promising overnight change is overpromising.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

Speak to your doctor first. Several essential oils are generally avoided during the first trimester, so please get advice specific to you rather than relying on a general rule.

When will my order arrive?

Orders dispatch the same or next working day. Metro cities: 3-5 business days. Rest of India: 4-6 business days.
