The cold reading comes mostly from menthol, the dominant constituent in peppermint oil, with menthone sitting underneath it and giving the sweeter, slightly herbal edge you catch a second later. That is also why the smell is so recognisable at tiny quantities — menthol is a small, light molecule that lifts off fast, which makes peppermint a classic top note and explains why it announces itself the moment the cap is off.

Peppermint is strong, so the dilution matters more than the routine does. The two ratios printed on the pack work out at roughly the same strength: 5 drops is about 0.25 ml, which in 2 tbsp of carrier oil (30 ml) is a little under 1%, and 2 drops in 1 tbsp (15 ml) lands in the same place. Stay around there. Doubling the drops does not double anything useful, it just makes the blend harsh. Patch test first — a little of the blend on the inside of your forearm, left twelve hours — before you put it anywhere larger. Keep it well away from your eyes, and wash your hands before you touch your face. Never swallow it. Keep the bottle closed and out of reach of children, and away from pets: cats in particular are widely considered sensitive to essential oils, so do not diffuse it in a closed room they cannot leave. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or using it on a child, ask your doctor before you start.

About This Essential Oil

What it actually is

Peppermint is not an ancient wild herb — it is a hybrid, a cross between watermint and spearmint that turned up in English fields in the seventeenth century and has been propagated ever since by runners rather than seed, because the plant is sterile and cannot breed true. Every peppermint plant is essentially a cutting of a cutting. What gets distilled is the leaf, harvested before the plant is in full flower, and steam carries the volatile oil out of it.

Two compounds do most of the talking. Menthol dominates, and it is what makes the smell read cold rather than merely fresh. Menthone sits under it with a sweeter, herbal edge. Both are small and light, which is why peppermint is classed as a top note: it announces itself immediately and it does not hang around.

Where ours comes from

Ours is grown and distilled on farms around Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh — the town that has been distilling for the Indian perfume trade for centuries, and which still sits at the centre of the country's mint belt. Steam distilled, bottled at 15 ml in amber glass with a glass pipette.

How to use it well

Count, do not pour. The pack gives two ratios and they land in the same place strength-wise: 5 drops in 2 tablespoons of carrier oil for the scalp, 2 drops in 1 tablespoon for a small patch of skin. A 15 ml bottle holds roughly 300 drops at about 0.05 ml each, so even at five drops a session you are a long way from the bottom.

Blend it in a small bowl, not in your palm, so the dilution is even. Wash your hands afterwards — the smell stays on fingers longer than it stays in a room.

Who it suits

People who want a room to smell clean and awake rather than warm and soft. It works hardest in small closed spaces: a hostel room after a day with the windows shut, a bathroom in monsoon, a desk corner in the afternoon. It also blends unusually well — rosemary and eucalyptus sharpen alongside it, lemon lifts it, and a drop of lavender takes the edge off if you find it too stark on its own.

Who it does not suit

If you associate mint with the dentist, this will not change your mind. Peppermint is a strong, cold, unsubtle smell, and there is a category of person who finds it clinical no matter how carefully it is blended. If you are shopping for something to wind down with in the evening, this is the wrong bottle and lavender is the right one. It is also the wrong choice around very young children, and worth asking a doctor about in pregnancy.

One honest limitation

It fades fast. That volatility is exactly what makes it so immediate, and there is no version of peppermint that is both instantly noticeable and long-lasting — the same lightness that gets it across a room in seconds is what takes it out again. If you want persistence, you want a resin, not a mint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will one bottle scent my whole flat?

Honestly, no — not a full one-BHK with the doors open. Peppermint is a light, highly volatile oil, so it spreads fast and thins out just as fast, and in a large open space it disappears into the air rather than filling it.

It works best in a closed room: a hostel room, a bedroom with the door shut, a bathroom, a WFH corner. If you want a smell that holds a bigger space for longer, frankincense is the better buy from our range.

Can I put it straight on my skin?

No. This is undiluted oil, and it is meant to be blended before it touches you. The pack gives you the ratio: 2 drops into 1 tablespoon of carrier oil for a small area.

Patch test the blend on your inner forearm and leave it twelve hours before going further. If your skin is already irritated, broken or sunburnt, leave it alone entirely.

Can I put it in my humidifier?

Not unless the manufacturer of your humidifier says so. Most room humidifiers are built to move plain water, and their plastic tanks and seals are not intended for essential oils, so you risk clouding or cracking the parts.

Use a diffuser designed for oils instead, and add the oil to the water in the tank rather than neat into the base.

Is it safe around my cat?

Be careful. Cats are widely considered especially sensitive to essential oils, and peppermint is one of the strong ones. Never apply it to a pet, and never leave a diffuser running in a shut room an animal cannot walk out of.

If you diffuse it at all, keep the door open so your cat can leave, keep the run short, and keep the bottle itself somewhere it cannot be knocked over.

Does it expire?

Yes. Best before is 36 months from the date of manufacture, printed on the carton. Citrus oils turn faster than this one, but peppermint is not permanent either.

Keep the cap tight, keep it out of sunlight and away from the kitchen hob, and store it upright. The amber glass is doing a job — it is there to keep light off the oil, so do not decant it into anything clear.

Does it smell like toothpaste?

It smells like the plant that toothpaste is imitating, which is not quite the same thing. The cold hit at the front is familiar, but underneath it there is a sweeter, greener, slightly herbal body that flavoured products usually leave out.

Some people still read it as clinical rather than cosy. If that is you, lavender will suit you better.

Can I apply this directly to my skin?

No. Undiluted essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be mixed with a carrier oil — coconut, jojoba or almond — before they touch skin. Patch test first.

How long before I see results?

Give it 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. Essential oils work gradually; anything promising overnight change is overpromising.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

Speak to your doctor first. Several essential oils are generally avoided during the first trimester, so please get advice specific to you rather than relying on a general rule.
