It is a sweet, heavy floral - closer to gulab jal than to anything fresh or clean. If you want warm and powdery rather than sweet and deep, lavender is the better buy. If you want something bright and light for a small room, orange or lemon will suit you far more than this will.

Most of what you smell in a steam-distilled rose is citronellol and geraniol, with nerol alongside them. Citronellol is the sweet, slightly waxy rose you recognise instantly; geraniol pulls it green and a little lemony, which is why the oil never quite settles into pure sugar. Steam distillation also carries over a small amount of natural rose wax, which is why a bottle of it behaves differently from a thin citrus oil in cold weather.

Make The Most Of Your Oil

Always into a carrier oil first, and always less than you think.

Face: two drops into one tablespoon of carrier oil, onto clean skin, left overnight and washed off in the morning
Hair and scalp: five drops into two tablespoons of carrier oil, massaged in, worked through the lengths, left overnight and washed off
Diffuser: into the water tank a drop at a time, stopping as soon as you can smell it from the doorway
Wardrobe or drawer: a drop on a cotton pad, tucked at the back, away from anything pale it could mark
Never neat on skin, never in your eyes, never swallowed - patch test on the inner forearm and wait a day before it goes near your face

1 DiluteTwo drops into one tablespoon of carrier oil in a small bowl. Stir it with the pipette.
2 ApplyOnto clean, dry skin. Nothing else on your face underneath it.
3 MassageSlow circles with the pads of your fingers until it stops sitting on the surface.
4 RinseSleep in it and wash it off in the morning with your usual cleanser.

Dilution, worked out: a standard drop is about 0.05ml, so two drops is 0.1ml. One tablespoon of carrier oil is 15ml. That puts the printed face dilution just under 0.7 per cent. The hair dose works out similarly - five drops is 0.25ml into two tablespoons, or 30ml, which is a little over 0.8 per cent. If you mix a bigger batch, keep those proportions rather than adding drops by eye. Patch test on the inside of your forearm and leave it a full day before using it anywhere on your face. Keep it away from your eyes. Do not swallow it. Store the bottle capped, upright and out of reach of children. Keep it away from cats especially - they are widely treated as far more sensitive to essential oils than we are, so do not diffuse in a shut room a cat cannot walk out of, and never put it on their fur or bedding. If you are pregnant, check with your doctor before using it at all.

About This Essential Oil

What it actually is

Rose oil is one of the slowest things in perfumery to make. The flowers have to be picked in the early morning while the aromatic fraction is still in them, and then steamed almost immediately. What comes off the still is a small amount of oil from a very large amount of flower, which is why rose is priced the way it is and sold in 15ml rather than in 100ml.

Steam distillation matters here. It is a different process from solvent extraction, and it gives a different result - cleaner, greener, with none of the deep jammy weight that a solvent-extracted rose has. What is in this bottle is the distilled kind.

Where ours comes from

Kannauj, in Uttar Pradesh. The town has been distilling flowers for a very long time and the surrounding farms grow for the stills rather than for the flower market. The carton names the species as Rosa Damascena, the damask rose, which is the one grown for distillation almost everywhere it is grown at all.

How to use it well

Dilute it, every time. Two drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil for the face, five drops into two tablespoons for hair and scalp. Mix it in a small bowl rather than in your palm so you can actually see the proportions.

In a diffuser, add it to the water a drop at a time and stop the moment you can smell it standing at the door. Rose does not need a running start. In a one-BHK flat or a hostel room it fills the space quickly, and past a certain point sweet stops reading as pleasant and starts reading as heavy.

It blends well with things that give it somewhere to sit - sandalwood traditionally, and within our range, frankincense underneath it or a citrus like orange over the top. Ylang ylang and jasmine will not balance it; they compete with it.

Who it suits

People who already know they like rose. If gulab jal, gulkand or rose in a mithai shop is a smell you actively enjoy rather than tolerate, this is the concentrated version of it and you will get on with it. It also suits anyone who wants one bottle to do a face routine, a hair routine and a bedroom, since the printed dilutions cover all three.

Who it does not suit

If you want a room to smell clean rather than sweet, this is the wrong bottle - eucalyptus or peppermint is what you are after. If you want soft, warm and powdery to wind down with, lavender does that better and costs less. And if you are buying a first essential oil with no strong opinion about rose, start with orange or lemon; they are far easier to live with and much harder to overdo.

One honest limitation

Rose is a loaded smell in Indian homes. It is in agarbatti, in bathroom fresheners, in wedding decoration, in sherbet. Some people meet it and think of a temple, some think of their grandmother's cupboard, and some think of a public bathroom. The oil is good; the association is not something the oil can argue with. If rose has ever put you off in the past, this will not change your mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 15ml actually enough to be worth buying?

Yes, because of how little goes in at a time. A 15ml bottle is roughly 300 drops at a standard 0.05ml drop, and the printed face dose is two drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil.

Most people end up using less rose than they planned to, not more. It is a loud smell for its size.

Can I put it straight on my skin?

No. The pack gives the dilution for a reason - two drops in one tablespoon of carrier oil for skin, five drops in two tablespoons for hair and scalp.

Patch test on the inner forearm and leave it a day before it goes near your face. If your skin reacts, stop and wash it off with more carrier oil rather than water.

Will it damage my diffuser or my humidifier?

An ultrasonic diffuser is built for water with a little oil in it, so it is fine. A room humidifier is not - it moves far more water, and oil sitting in the tank can mark the plastic over time.

Either way, empty and wipe the tank dry between fills. Essential oils leave a residue, and a sweet one like this leaves a noticeable one.

Is it safe around my cat?

Keep it well away from them. Cats are widely treated as far more sensitive to essential oils than people are, so do not diffuse in a closed room a cat cannot leave, and never apply it to their fur, paws or bedding.

Does it expire?

Best before 36 months from the date of manufacture. The date is on the carton.

Keep the cap tight and the bottle out of direct sun. The amber glass is doing a job, and a sunny windowsill undoes it.

Does it just smell like rose water?

No. Gulab jal is mostly water with a trace of the aromatic in it. This is the distilled oil, so it is much sweeter, much heavier, and carries a green, slightly lemony edge underneath the sweetness.

If rose sherbet or a bathroom freshener is your reference point, this will read as a great deal deeper and less sugary than that.

Why has it gone cloudy or thick in the bottle?

Steam-distilled rose carries a small amount of natural rose wax across with it. When the room is cool - an air-conditioned bedroom, a north Indian winter morning - that wax can make the oil cloud or set semi-solid.

Close the cap and roll the bottle between your palms for a minute or two. It goes clear again. Nothing has gone wrong with it.

Can I apply this directly to my skin?

No. Undiluted essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be mixed with a carrier oil — coconut, jojoba or almond — before they touch skin. Patch test first.

How long before I see results?

Give it 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. Essential oils work gradually; anything promising overnight change is overpromising.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

Speak to your doctor first. Several essential oils are generally avoided during the first trimester, so please get advice specific to you rather than relying on a general rule.
