Rosemary belongs to the mint family, and it smells nothing like mint. The cold, clean lift at the front is 1,8-cineole, the same compound that makes eucalyptus read like a just-cleaned bathroom. Sitting under it is camphor, which is what gives rosemary its dry, slightly medicinal edge, and alpha-pinene, which is the resinous pine note you get walking past a hedge in the sun. The proportions shift with where the plant grows and when it is cut, so no two harvests smell identical.

Make The Most Of Your Oil

Always diluted, always in small amounts — the two ratios below are the ones printed on the pack.

  • Scalp: 5 drops into 2 tablespoons of carrier oil, worked in with fingertips
  • Face: 2 drops into 1 tablespoon of carrier oil, blended fully before it touches skin
  • Overnight is the routine on the pack — apply, sleep on it, wash it out in the morning
  • Diffuser: water in the tank, then the number of drops your own diffuser's instructions give; start on the shortest run setting

Do the arithmetic once and you will not have to think about it again. Two tablespoons is about 30 ml, and five drops is about 0.25 ml, so the scalp mix lands a little under one percent. One tablespoon is about 15 ml and two drops is about 0.1 ml, so the face mix is around the same. That is the strength to stay near. Doubling the drops does not double anything except the chance of an angry patch of skin. Patch test before the first proper use: a small amount of the diluted mix on the inner forearm, left alone for 24 hours. Keep it away from eyes, and if it does get in, flush with plenty of a plain carrier oil rather than water. Never swallow it. Store it out of reach of children and pets. Cats are especially sensitive to essential oils, so keep the bottle shut away from them and give them a room they can walk out of if you diffuse. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or on any medication, check with a doctor before you use it at all.

About This Essential Oil

What it actually is

Rosemary is an evergreen shrub in the mint family, with tough needle-shaped leaves and small pale lilac flowers — the sprig drawn on the label is the real plant, not a stylisation. The oil is steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops. Steam is pushed through the plant material, the volatile aromatic compounds travel with it, and the two separate once they cool. Roughly speaking, it takes a great deal of leaf to fill 15 ml, which is why a bottle this size is dosed in drops rather than spoons.

Where ours comes from

Ours is grown and distilled around Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, a town that has been distilling aromatics for centuries and still runs on the same rhythm — cut, load, distil, decant. Country of origin is India. Net quantity is 15 ml in amber glass with a glass pipette, one bottle per carton.

How to use it well

Two ratios cover almost everything. Five drops into two tablespoons of carrier oil gives you a full scalp mix. Two drops into one tablespoon is a face mix. In both cases the oil goes into the carrier first, in a small bowl, and gets blended properly before it goes anywhere near you. In a diffuser, follow your own machine's instructions for how much to add, and start on the shortest timer setting rather than running it all evening — a smell you stop noticing after ten minutes is a smell you are wasting.

Who it suits

People who like green, dry, slightly austere smells. If you enjoy the air around a herb garden, a woodshed, or a kitchen with rosemary in the pan, this will land. It sits well in a study corner or a bathroom, and it blends easily with lavender, lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus if you want to soften or brighten it.

Who it does not suit

Anyone after cosy. Rosemary has a camphor backbone, and camphor reads clean and a little clinical to a lot of people — the same quality that makes it feel alert in a workspace makes it feel wrong beside a bed at eleven at night. If that is what you are shopping for, lavender is the buy. If you want something that hangs in the air for hours after you switch the diffuser off, frankincense is the one; rosemary will not do that no matter how many drops you add.

One honest limitation

It fades fast. Rosemary is a light, volatile oil, so it announces itself quickly and leaves quickly — that is the botany, not a fault in this bottle. In a small closed room that is fine. In a large open-plan space, or with a ceiling fan going, it is simply not enough on its own, and no amount of extra drops will fix the airflow.

Storage and safety

Keep it capped, upright and out of sunlight; amber glass helps but it is not armour. Best before 36 months from the date of manufacture. Always dilute — never neat on skin, never near eyes, never swallowed, and patch test the inner forearm 24 hours before first use. Out of reach of children and pets, and well away from cats, which are especially sensitive to essential oils. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with a doctor before using it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will one bottle scent my whole flat?

Honestly, no. In a diffuser this handles one closed room well — a bedroom, a study corner, a bathroom — and that is where it earns its money.

An open-plan living room, or any room with a fan running, will thin it out faster than you can top it up. Shut the door, run it for a short stretch, and let it build.

Can I put it straight on my skin?

No. It leaves the bottle undiluted, so it goes into a carrier oil first — two drops into a tablespoon for the face, five into two tablespoons for the scalp.

Patch test the inner forearm and give it a full day before you use it more widely. If the skin goes red or itchy, wash it off with a plain oil and stop.

Will it damage my humidifier?

Very likely. Ultrasonic humidifiers are built for plain water, and oils can soften or crack the plastic tank and clog the disc.

Is it safe around my cat?

Keep the two apart. Cats are especially sensitive to essential oils, and diffused oil settles on fur and paws where it gets groomed off.

If you diffuse at all in a house with a cat, use one room, leave the door open so the animal can walk away, and never put anything on the cat itself. Ask your vet first.

Does it expire?

Yes — 36 months from the date of manufacture, which is printed on the carton.

Cap on tight, upright, away from sunlight and heat. A bottle left on a sunny windowsill will go dull and turn harsh long before that date arrives.

Does it smell medicinal?

To some people, yes. There is a camphor edge to rosemary that reads clean and faintly clinical, more hedge in the sun than anything sweet.

Wanting soft and cosy instead? That is lavender's job, not this one. But if you like a dry, alert, green smell, this is exactly that.

Can I apply this directly to my skin?

No. Undiluted essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be mixed with a carrier oil — coconut, jojoba or almond — before they touch skin. Patch test first.

How long before I see results?

Give it 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. Essential oils work gradually; anything promising overnight change is overpromising.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

Speak to your doctor first. Several essential oils are generally avoided during the first trimester, so please get advice specific to you rather than relying on a general rule.
