This is an astringent, faintly camphorous smell - closer to a chemist's shelf than a candle. If what you want is warm and soft to fall asleep in, buy lavender instead. It is the powdery, calming one, and it never reads clinical.

The sharpness is mostly terpinen-4-ol, the compound that dominates tea tree oil and gives it that clean, faintly antiseptic green character. A smaller amount of 1,8-cineole - the same compound that makes eucalyptus read cold - sits underneath it and explains the camphor edge you catch in the first few seconds. Nothing has been added to soften either of them.

Make The Most Of Your Oil

Into a spoon of carrier oil first, always. This one is never used neat.

Face, at night: two drops into one tablespoon of carrier oil, spread evenly, washed off in the morning
Scalp, once a week: five drops into two tablespoons of carrier oil, worked into the parting, left on overnight
Diffuser: three or four drops in the tank with the bedroom door shut, run 30 to 45 minutes rather than all evening
Wardrobe or a damp monsoon corner: one drop on a cotton pad, pushed to the back of the shelf, swapped every week
Patch test on the inner forearm 24 hours before the first face or scalp use, and keep it well away from your eyes

1 Measure it outFive drops from the pipette into two tablespoons of carrier oil in a small steel katori. Coconut, almond or plain sesame all work.
2 Work it inFingertips, not nails. Start at the parting and move across the scalp in small circles for two or three minutes.
3 Take it throughA wide-tooth comb from root to tip, so the oil is spread instead of sitting in one patch.
4 Sleep on itOld pillowcase, hair tied loose. Shampoo it out in the morning - it needs a proper wash, not a rinse.

Dilute it, every time. A dropper drop is about 0.05 ml and a tablespoon is 15 ml, so two drops in one tablespoon works out at roughly 0.7% - and five drops in two tablespoons is much the same. That is the strength these routines are built around. Patch test on the inner forearm and wait a day before you put it anywhere larger. Keep it away from your eyes, and if it does get in, flush with a plain carrier oil rather than water. Never swallow it. Store it capped, upright and out of reach of children and pets - cats are especially sensitive to essential oils, so do not diffuse in a shut room a cat cannot leave, and never put it on their fur or paws. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor before using it at all.

About This Essential Oil

What it actually is

Tea tree oil is steam distilled from the leaves and thin end-twigs of Melaleuca alternifolia, a narrow-leaved shrub in the myrtle family - the same family as eucalyptus and clove. The plant is Australian by origin, growing wild in the coastal north of New South Wales, and its leaves are so fine they look almost like pine needles. The little white bottlebrush flowers on the label are real, but they are not what is distilled. The oil lives in the leaf.

What you smell is largely terpinen-4-ol, with a smaller amount of 1,8-cineole underneath giving it the cold edge. It is a middleweight oil - not a citrus top note that vanishes in minutes, not a resin that sits for hours - and it announces itself far more loudly than its size suggests.

Where ours comes from

Ours comes from the farms of Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, the town that has been distilling for perfume longer than most countries have had a perfume industry, and it is steam distilled rather than solvent extracted. Fifteen millilitres in amber glass, one ingredient, sealed in a printed carton with a glass pipette.

How to use it well

Small amounts, always diluted, in small rooms. Two drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil for the face at night; five drops in two tablespoons for a weekly scalp oiling before you shampoo. In a diffuser it works best in a closed bathroom or bedroom for half an hour, not as background scent for a whole evening. Blend it with lavender if you want to round it off, or with lemon if you want it brighter.

At roughly 0.05 ml a drop, a 15 ml bottle holds somewhere around three hundred drops. At two to five drops a session, that is a long time.

Who it suits

People who like clean over cosy. If your idea of a good-smelling room is one that has just been mopped, if you reach for mint and eucalyptus over vanilla, if you want a bathroom to smell scrubbed rather than scented - this is your bottle. It is also the practical choice for a monsoon wardrobe or a hostel room that never quite airs out.

Who it does not suit

Anyone shopping for a bedtime smell. This is not a soft oil and it will not become one, no matter how little you use. If you want warm, powdery and floral, buy lavender. If you want something sweet and heavy that fills a room, jasmine or ylang ylang. If you want cheerful rather than clinical, orange. Buying tea tree and hoping it relaxes you is the single commonest mistake with this oil.

One honest limitation

It fades fast. Tea tree is volatile enough that a diffuser session is over well before the evening is, and in a large or open-plan room it thins out to almost nothing. For anything bigger than one closed room, you will either be refilling or reaching for a heavier oil.

Storage and safety

Cap it tight, keep it upright, keep it dark, keep it off the windowsill. Out of reach of children and pets, and away from cats in particular. Patch test before the first use on face or scalp, never neat on skin, never near the eyes, never swallowed. Check with your doctor before using it in pregnancy. Best before 36 months from the date of manufacture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put it straight on my skin?

No. Two drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil, and patch test on your inner forearm a day before you use it properly.

Neat, this is a strong astringent oil and it can leave skin red and sore, particularly on the face. Diluting is not caution for its own sake - it is simply how the oil is meant to be used.

Will it scent my whole flat?

Honestly, not on its own. It is a light, quick oil that announces itself and then goes, so it suits a bathroom, a wardrobe or one bedroom with the door shut.

For an open-plan one-BHK you would be topping up the diffuser all evening. Frankincense is the better buy if you want something that stays put for hours.

Will it damage my diffuser or humidifier?

An ultrasonic diffuser built for essential oils is fine - a few drops go into the water in the tank, never into an empty one.

A plain room humidifier is a different thing and oils do not belong in it. Undiluted oil can perish rubber seals over time and mark some plastics and polished wood, so wipe up spills quickly and rinse the tank out every few uses.

Is it safe around my cat?

Be careful. Cats process essential oils differently from us and are far more sensitive to them than dogs are, tea tree especially.

Never apply it to a cat or leave it where one can knock it over, and if you diffuse, keep the room open so they can walk out. If your cat has any breathing trouble, skip diffusing altogether and ask your vet.

Does it expire?

Yes - 36 months from the date of manufacture, printed on the carton. Amber glass and a tight cap are doing most of the work of getting it there.

Oxygen is what ages it. Cap it properly, keep it out of the bathroom window's afternoon sun, and note that older, oxidised tea tree oil is more likely to irritate skin than a fresh bottle. If it smells noticeably harsher than you remember, stop using it on skin.

Does it smell medicinal?

Yes, and there is no point pretending otherwise. Sharp, green, slightly camphorous - the smell people associate with a first-aid cupboard.

Some people find that reassuring and some find it cold. If you already know you want warm and sweet, this is the wrong bottle and lavender or ylang ylang is the right one.

Can I apply this directly to my skin?

No. Undiluted essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be mixed with a carrier oil — coconut, jojoba or almond — before they touch skin. Patch test first.

How long before I see results?

Give it 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. Essential oils work gradually; anything promising overnight change is overpromising.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

Speak to your doctor first. Several essential oils are generally avoided during the first trimester, so please get advice specific to you rather than relying on a general rule.
