This is a sweet, heavy, unmistakably floral smell rather than a fresh or a cosy one, and it is loud for its size. If you want warm and soft instead, buy the lavender. If you want bright and light, buy the orange.
What's Inside Matters

The sweetness in ylang ylang is not one smell but several, layered. Benzyl acetate carries the jasmine side of it. p-Cresyl methyl ether is the sharp, almost animal note that sits on top when you first open the bottle and settles within a minute. Linalool softens the middle. Benzyl benzoate is heavy and slow to move, and it is the reason ylang ylang is still there when lighter oils have gone. This is also why two bottles of ylang ylang can smell noticeably unlike each other - the flowers are distilled in fractions, and where the fraction is drawn changes which of those layers dominates.
Make The Most Of Your Oil
It dilutes before it does anything else. Two printed rituals, both overnight, both small.
- Scalp, overnight: two tablespoons of carrier oil with five drops stirred in, massaged at the roots, combed down, rinsed out in the morning
- Face, overnight: one tablespoon of carrier oil with two drops in it, massaged in gently and left on
- Diffuser: fill the tank, add the oil a drop at a time until you can smell it from the doorway, and shut the door - on a diffuser with 1H, 3H and 6H settings, start at 1H
- Wardrobe or a PG cupboard: two drops onto a cotton ball, sat behind folded clothes rather than against them
- Patch test first: a little of the diluted mix on your arm, left a full 24 hours, checked before you go further - never neat on skin
- 1 MixTwo tablespoons of carrier oil in a katori, five drops of ylang ylang stirred through. Coconut, almond or plain sesame all work.
- 2 MassagePart your hair in sections and rub it in at the roots with your fingertips, not your nails. Two or three minutes is enough.
- 3 CombWide-tooth comb, roots down to the ends, so the lengths get some of it too.
- 4 RinseLeave it on overnight on an old pillowcase, then wash it out with your usual shampoo in the morning.
Dilute it, every time. The printed skin ratio is two drops per tablespoon of carrier oil: a drop is about 0.05 ml, so that is roughly 0.1 ml of essential oil in 15 ml of carrier, a little under 0.7%. The scalp ratio works out about the same - five drops, roughly 0.25 ml, into two tablespoons or 30 ml, is a shade over 0.8%. Neither is a number to round up. Patch test before the first proper use: mix a small amount at the ratio you plan to use, put it on the inside of your forearm, leave it 24 hours and look. Ylang ylang sits among the florals more likely to irritate skin, so this one is worth the wait. Keep it away from your eyes, and away from the skin just under them. Do not swallow it. Store the bottle where children cannot reach it, cap screwed on. Diffuse only in a room your pets can walk out of - cats are the household animal to be most careful with here, and a shut door with a diffuser going is the combination to avoid. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before using this on skin or in a diffuser, rather than deciding it from a label.

About This Essential Oil
What it actually is
Ylang ylang is the flower oil of Cananga odorata, a tall tropical tree in the custard-apple family. The flowers are strange to look at - six long, narrow, drooping petals like green ribbon, which slowly turn deep yellow as they ripen. Green flowers barely smell. It is only when they have gone fully yellow that they are worth distilling, and pickers take them early in the morning while it is still cool.
Then it gets stranger. The still runs for a long time, and the oil is drawn off in fractions across those hours rather than collected as one batch. The earliest fraction is light and sharp-sweet; the later ones are heavier, flatter and cheaper. They are sold as separate grades. This is why ylang ylang, more than almost any other oil, varies from bottle to bottle - two people can describe it completely differently and both be right about what they smelled.
Where ours comes from
The carton says Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh. Kannauj has been distilling flower oils for centuries and still runs copper stills for a living, which is a reasonable thing for an Indian oil to be attached to. What we will not tell you is that the tree grows there, because it does not - Cananga odorata needs wet tropical heat.
How to use it well
Small amounts, and always into something else. For skin, two drops per spoon of carrier oil; for a scalp mix, five drops per two spoons; both left on overnight. In a diffuser, go one drop at a time and stop the moment the smell reaches the doorway - with this oil, the mistake is almost never using too little.
It also blends down well, which is the way most people end up enjoying it. A drop of orange or lemon alongside it cuts the sweetness and makes the whole thing lighter. Sandalwood or frankincense underneath it does the opposite, and makes it slower and rounder.
Who it suits
People who already like big florals and heavy perfume, and are not looking for subtle. People who want a smell for the evening rather than the working day. Anyone building a hair-oiling routine who wants the mix to smell of something on purpose. If you have ever bought a jasmine oil and wished it went further, this is that, with more body.
Who it does not suit
Anyone who wants a room to smell clean. This is the wrong tool entirely - it is sweet and it is dense, and it will not read as fresh no matter how little you use. For that, eucalyptus or lemon.
Anyone who finds strong florals overwhelming should skip it rather than buy it small and hope. Lavender is the softer, quieter version of the same instinct, and frankincense is the one to buy if you want something that lingers without being sweet at all.
One honest limitation
It clings. That is the whole appeal and also the problem - once it is on a pillowcase, a dupatta or the back of a chair, it stays through a wash cycle or two, and you cannot take it back down mid-evening the way you can with a citrus. Use it in a room you are happy to have smell like this tomorrow.
Storage and safety
Screw the cap back on. Store it dark, dry and away from heat. Best before is three years from the manufacturing date. Dilute before every skin use, test a little on your arm and wait a day, keep it clear of your eyes, do not swallow it, and keep it out of reach of children and pets. Cats are the sensitive ones - diffuse only where they can leave the room. Pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor before you start.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will one bottle scent my whole flat?
Honestly, no. A diffuser puts out a small amount of scented vapour, and an open-plan flat with the windows up will swallow it before it reaches the far wall.
Use it one closed room at a time - a bedroom, a bathroom, a desk corner - with the door shut. If you want the smell in two rooms, run it in the room you are actually sitting in and let the rest of the flat be.
Can I put it straight on my skin?
No. This is undiluted oil and it goes into a carrier first. The carton puts two drops to a tablespoon of carrier, which is roughly 0.7% by volume.
Patch test on your inner forearm and give it a full day before you use it properly. This is not an oil to find out about on your face, so skipping that step is a bad trade.
Will it damage my humidifier?
It might. A humidifier is built to move plain water, and oil sitting in the tank can cloud or soften the plastic over time. Ultrasonic diffusers sold for essential oils are built for it; humidifiers usually are not.
Check what the manufacturer says. If they do not mention oils, keep the two apart. A cotton ball tucked behind a cushion does the same job with nothing to break.
Is it safe around my cat?
Be careful with it. Cats are widely treated as the household pet most sensitive to essential oils, and the situation worth avoiding is a shut room, a running diffuser and a cat that cannot leave.
Diffuse only where the cat can walk out, keep sessions short, and keep the bottle itself somewhere a paw cannot reach. If your cat starts avoiding the room, stop and open a window. For anything specific to your cat, ask your vet.
Does it expire?
Yes. Best before is 36 months from manufacture, printed on the carton. The amber glass is already doing part of the work, since light and heat are what age an oil fastest.
Cap screwed on, off the windowsill, out of the car. A cupboard shelf keeps it better than a bathroom ledge does through a monsoon.
Does it smell medicinal, or like an agarbatti?
Neither. There is no smoke in it and nothing sharp or antiseptic. It is creamy and fruity-floral, closest to jasmine, with a sweetness some people read as almost banana-like.
What it is, is a lot sweeter than most people expect. If heavy florals are not your thing you will know inside a minute of opening the cap, and no amount of using less will change what it is.
Can I apply this directly to my skin?
No. Undiluted essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be mixed with a carrier oil — coconut, jojoba or almond — before they touch skin. Patch test first.
How long before I see results?
Give it 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. Essential oils work gradually; anything promising overnight change is overpromising.
Is it safe during pregnancy?
Speak to your doctor first. Several essential oils are generally avoided during the first trimester, so please get advice specific to you rather than relying on a general rule.
